Verizon Envy on the Metro No More!

In case you have not already heard the news, Metro has announced an agreement to allow all cell phone providers to install equipment in the transit tunnels and stations! What does this mean? It means you no longer have to be green with envy of your buddies with Verizon, because you too will have voice and data service in the metro before you know it!

"Twenty of the busiest underground stations will have expanded cell phone service by the end of this year, and the entire rail system will be equipped by 2012, Metro said in an announcement this afternoon."

Read the Washington Post's article here: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/getthere/2009/02/metro_announces_deal_for_more.html

And even for you Verizon people (like myself), your service should drastically improved. These improvements will even allow for a transit system wide WIFI network to be implemented in the future. While I don't see that as being a very necessary thing, I love that we are changing policy to make way for proper private industry innovation to supplement both the enjoyment of the riders AND the revenue of mass transit.

I am a HUGE fan of this move by Metro. I know there are haters out there, but they are ridiculous. Completely ridiculous. This means that we now will have full data (read: email/web/everything) access on all major cell networks. Stop complaining about the potential for more people to be talking on their phones, voice use will be limited anyway. Have you ever actually tried to talk on your phone in a tunnel? Conversation = fail. And that is a good thing. Just like this move.

BRAVO METRO!

I promise that the annoying ipod guy will definitely find a way to carry on a long, loud, and inappropriate conversation while on the metro...
